Childhood Diabetes

By Ryan Attar

Mistakenly called juvenile diabetes and, for years, believed to occur primarily in youth, we now know that Type 1 diabetes can start at any age. However, it’s very important that children who do have T1 diabetes manage their blood sugars and A1c properly. Unregulated, high blood sugars and hyperglycemia have dangerous effects on a child's development and health. Multiple studies show that children with T1 diabetes whose blood sugar is poorly controlled experience decreased growth.[1] We also see a correlation between glycemic control and memory and brain dynamics in these children. [2]  Referring to the A1C to glucose chart below, which is based on formulas developed by Dr. Richard Bernstein, I recommend everyone with diabetes, both children and adults, whether they have T1 or T2 diabetes, maintain blood sugars in the green, and preferably the dark green zone. Using a continuous glucose monitor, like a Dexcom, this would mean an average blood sugar in the 80s.

In contrast to studies showing poor health and development in most T1 children, who are following a standard high carbohydrate, endorsed by nearly all endocrinologists and diabetes educators, a 2018 study shows amazing results following the approach that I use with my patients. This study conducted by Harvard in the journal Pediatrics found exceptional blood sugar control, great lipids/cholesterol, low rates of hypoglycemia (low blood sugars), and high levels of overall health & satisfaction. What I find the most interesting about this study is that the children in it were at the top of their growth chart. Not only were they not succumbing to poor growth like many T1 youths, but they were outgrowing their peers. The participants in this study follow a low carbohydrate approach, and use Dr. Richard Bernstein's methods for managing blood sugars. The fact that growth was above average and incidents of hypoglycemia are reduced tells me that this approach is very safe and effective for children. I can help your child and family use these methods to normalize blood sugars to live a happy and healthy life.
